Thesis title: Development and characterisation of oral alpha- galactosylceramide liposomal formulation for use in atopy

Co-supervisor: Prof. Sarah Hook (School of Pharmacy, University of Otago)

Project description: Allergic conditions can collectively affect more than a quarter of the population and current treatments are limited by their transient effects and inability to modify the underlying immune pathology. The concept of oral particulate formulations, which incorporate adjuvants that can induce a selective regulatory response, would be promising not only in terms of disease modifying nature of the treatment, but also for ease, safety and cost of administration.

Aspects to be investigated in the project include different particulate formulations and coating systems, mechanism of how particulate formulations interact with the immune system and effectiveness of the formulations for treating allergy in in vivo mouse models.
